Activities Using the Five Senses for Kids – A Teddy Bear Nurseries Guide to Sensory Learning

Posted by teddybear | 7 September 2025

At Teddy Bear Nurseries, we believe that learning isn’t just about books and blackboards— it’s about touching, tasting, smelling, seeing, and hearing the world around us! That’s why we incorporate the five senses into everyday activities to help children develop awareness, language, creativity, and confidence.

Whether your little one is squishing playdough, listening to birds, or smelling cinnamon, sensory play builds brain connections and encourages curiosity in a way that traditional learning just can’t match.

Why Are the Five Senses So Important?

The five senses—sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell—are how young children make sense of the world. Through sensory activities, children can:

  • Boost brain development
  • Build fine motor and language skills
  • Develop emotional awareness
  • Strengthen memory and focus
  • Explore creativity in a safe, fun way

At Teddy Bear Nurseries the best Preschool in Abu Dhabi , our classrooms and play zones are designed with sensory learning in mind—giving your child the chance to explore their world with all five senses, every single day.

Our Top Five Senses Activities for Kids

1. Sight – Color Hunts

We love bright, beautiful things! One of our favorite activities is going on a color hunt around the classroom or garden.

Activity idea: Find something red, something blue, something green—then create a collage using your discoveries.

2. Sound – Listening Walks & Music Games

Children are naturally drawn to sound. We take little ears on a listening walk, encouraging them to notice birds chirping, leaves rustling, or water trickling.

Activity idea: We play “Guess That Sound!”—a fun game where kids identify sounds like bells, rain, or animals. It’s great for focus and vocabulary building.

3. Touch – Sensory Bins & Texture Trails

Nothing beats messy play! Our touch-based activities include bins filled with rice, sand, water beads, or jelly. Children dig in and describe how things feel—squishy, sticky, bumpy, soft.

Activity idea: Make a texture trail using materials like fabric, feathers, cotton balls, or bubble wrap. Kids walk barefoot or use their hands to feel the difference.

4. Smell – Mystery Scent Jars

We introduce kids to different smells using mystery jars filled with cinnamon, lavender, citrus, and mint. Children guess each scent and describe what it reminds them of.

Activity idea: Create a “scent garden” using herbs like basil, rosemary, and thyme. Let children crush leaves gently and inhale the aromas—so calming!

5. Taste – Safe Food Tasting

Under supervision, we turn snack time into a learning experience. We offer small, safe tastes of sweet (banana), sour (lemon), salty (pretzels), and bitter (dark chocolate) to help kids describe flavors.

Activity idea: Let kids create a “taste chart” using emojis to rate each flavor: yum, sour, interesting!

Bringing the Senses Together: Multi-Sensory Play

At Teddy Bear Nurseries, we often combine multiple senses in one magical activity. For example:

  • Nature exploration: We pick up leaves, listen to birds, smell flowers, and spot bugs on a sunny walk.

These experiences create lasting memories and build language, imagination, and empathy.
