By the time children are 3 to 4 years old, they’re much more independent and capable of understanding routines, expectations, and instructions. However, they may still have occasional moments of separation anxiety or nervousness about new environments.
At this age, children are better able to express their feelings, so take the time to talk to them about how they’re feeling about the Early Learning Center. Ask open-ended questions like, “How do you feel about going to nursery tomorrow?” or “What are you looking forward to?” Acknowledging their feelings helps them feel understood and supported.
Preschoolers often need time to transition between activities. Give them a heads-up about what’s coming next: “In five minutes, we’ll get ready for nursery.” This gives them time to mentally prepare for the change in environment, making it easier to leave the house and head to the Early Learning Center.
Children pick up on your emotions, so it’s important to stay upbeat when talking about the Early Learning Center. If you seem anxious or sad about leaving them, they may mirror those feelings. Instead, focus on the positives: talk about the fun things they’ll do, their friends, and their favorite parts of the day.
Even though your child is older, they may still need some reassurance. Let them know that you’ll be back at the end of the day and that the Early Learning Center is a safe place where they can learn and play. Remind them that they’ve successfully gone to the Early Learning Center before, and this day will be just as fun.
As your preschooler continues to grow and develop, take time to celebrate their independence. Point out how much they’ve grown, how many new things they’re learning, and how well they’re doing at the Early Learning Center. This will boost their confidence and help them feel proud of themselves.
