Settling-In Strategies for Toddlers (12 Months to 2 Years)

Posted by teddybear | 2 ديسمبر 2024

Toddlers are a bundle of energy, curiosity, and strong emotions. They are becoming more independent, but they still rely on you for comfort and safety. At this stage, separation anxiety might still be present, but toddlers also have an increasing need to explore their world, making the Early Learning Center a wonderful environment for their growth.

Short Goodbyes

By now, you may have noticed that long, drawn-out goodbyes often make things worse. Toddlers can sense hesitation, and this can heighten their anxiety. Instead, keep your goodbyes short and sweet. A quick hug, a cheerful “I’ll be back soon,” and a confident exit will reassure your toddler that the Early Learning Center is a safe place.

Routine, Routine, Routine

Toddlers thrive on routine and predictability. Knowing what comes next in their day helps them feel secure. Work with the Early Learning Center to maintain consistent nap times, mealtimes, and playtimes. When possible, mirror your home routine at the Early Learning Center to make the transition easier.

Encourage Independence

At this age, toddlers are eager to try things on their own. Letting them make small choices—like what shoes to wear or what toy to bring to the Early Learning Center—can give them a sense of control and confidence. This independence helps them feel more secure when entering new environments.

Consistency in Caregivers

Toddlers form strong bonds with their caregivers. Having the same teacher or Early Learning Center worker with your child each day can help them feel more comfortable. If possible, introduce the caregiver gradually, and allow your toddler time to build a relationship with them before leaving for long periods.

Talk About the Early Learning Center at Home

Talking positively about the Early Learning Center at home can help your toddler look forward to going. Share stories about their friends, their favorite toys, or the fun activities they’ll do. This can help frame the Early Learning Center as a safe, enjoyable space in their mind.Explore our Teddy 1 learning environment
